We of the Never-Never and The Little Black Princess are two classics of Australian literature written by Jeannie Gunn
In 1902 Mrs Gunn accompanied her husband to the remote Elsey cattle station near the Roper River in the Northern Territory. Resented at first by the tough men of the station, this tiny woman soon won them over with her courage and her sharp sense of humour, also succeeding in gaining the respect of the Aborigines with whom she came in contact.
Mrs Gunn wrote many letters to her family and friends in the South, telling of her experiences, and on her return to Melbourne she was persuaded to turn these letters into a book. The book, The Little Black Princess, was published in 1905, followed by another, We of the Never-Never, in 1908.
Both books have been read and enjoyed by generations of Australians.
