NEIL M. GUNN was born in 1891, a crofter-fisherman's son from Latheron in Caithness. He spent some of his boyhood in Galloway, and worked as an exciseman from 1906 until
1937. From then until his death in January 1973, he lived in the Highlands and devoted himself to writing.
