This is an intriguing account of a huge area of Australia which is virtually unknown to most people, yet is full of current and historical interest. The vast, empty spaces north of the Great Australian Bight once formed an impassable barrier between the settled East and the developing West, and its conquest by road, rail, and telegraph makes a fascinating portion of the narrative.

The author blends the historical picture of the Nullarbor with an account of his own journey. He writes about the the people he met, both the old hands of the area and a variety of unusual travellers, and about the strange landscape in which there is as much of interest under the ground as on the surface.

"Crossing the Nullarbor"

still has undertones of adventure and the author's tips will prove as invaluable to anyone planning to drive across the continent as this book will prove enthralling to the armchair traveller.

Since demobilisation at the end of the Second World War, Basil Fuller has been a wanderer. During travels in more than eighty countries, especially in the Pacific area and in Africa south of the Sahara, he has made a feature of long road journeys. The longest of all was a six-year expedition around Australia, travelling by car and caravan, and never spending a single night under the roof of a house. His travels have given him ample material for his literary work. He has had a dozen books published, as well as many articles in a variety of journals, and has had wide experience in broadcasting.

He and his wife now live in New Zealand, but in early 1972 he returned to Australia to collect material for two new books.
