Henry Hossing was in no condition to flee the swamp, and he knew that the unspeakable menace waiting in the darkness was held at bay only by the failing gleam of his fire. He tried to scream, but no sound came from his tightened throat. The ghastly stench became stronger and he could hear a strange sliding, slithering sound in the black shadows of the nearby bushes.
