Finally solving the murder that marked the end of an era

It was Chang Pao-chen who reported the body.

On that cold morning he was taking his prized songbird for a walk along the Tartar Wall. He noticed two rickshaw-pullers squatting below, pointing across the wasteland. Chang drew closer, wary of the wild dogs.

Later, what Chang saw was disputed as the local rumour mill swung into action. But there was no doubting that the woman he found at the base of the Fox Tower was dead, and not just any woman, but a foreigner. A laowai. Even in the half light Chang could see that her body had been badly beaten. He could see cut marks on her pale bare legs...
