Maugham himself acknowledged Maupassant as the prime master from whom he learnt much of his craft. Of the thirty stories in this volume some take place on Pacific islands, and some in England, Spain, and France. They include Rain, the sardonic tragedy of Mr Davidson, the prudish missionary, and Sadie Thompson, the prostitute.
