The story beings in April 1203 during the violent sack of Constantinople by the knights of the Fourth Crusade. Amid the chaos, the protagonist, Baudolino, a simple peasant from northern Italy with a talent for languages and a skill for telling lies, saves a byzantine historian and high court official named Niketas Choniates from certain death.
