The family consisted of the husband, a University professor on sabbatical leave. his wife (the author) and four children. The caravan is the making of the story, as its use for more than half the time spent away from home enabled them to see,
in a reasonably leisurely way, a lot of U.K. and something of Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy and France, in that order.
